Se divide en dos áreas: una situada en la parte continental, donde está propiamente la ciudad, y otra, en una isla de 22 Km. de largo que concentra la Zona Hotelera. Delimitada al norte por la Bahía de Mujeres, al este por el mar Caribe y al oeste por la laguna Nichupté, la Isla de Cancún, que semeja un "7" se une a tierra firme mediante dos puentes: el del canal Nichupté, a 4 Km. del centro de la ciudad, y el del canal Nizuc, al otro extremo, que une a Punta Nizuc con la parte continental, rumbo al aeropuerto y a la Riviera Maya. El entorno natural de Cancún se caracteriza por su vegetación subtropical con árboles de selva baja y especies como flamboyanes, acacias y tamarindos. En la línea costera prevalece el manglar donde habitan el cangrejo azul, lagartos, cocodrilos de río y mapaches, y donde anida gran cantidad de aves como garzas, ibis y cormoranes. A lo largo de la costa de Cancún se distribuyen numerosas playas, algunas de las cuales dan a las aguas apacibles de la Bahía de Mujeres y otras que se hallan frente al mar Caribe, en mar abierto. En las playas, ubicadas hacia el mar Caribe, se recomienda especial precaución cuando el mar está picado y, en general, en todas las playas deben tomarse en cuenta las banderas de aviso localizadas frente a los hoteles: rojo o negro significa peligro; amarillo, precaución; verde o azul, aguas tranquilas.
La arena de las playas de Cancún presenta una textura suave y fina y un color blanco característico. Este color, que la hace fresca porque refracta los rayos solares y retiene menos calor, se debe a su composición, una mezcla de sedimentos de material calcáreo: pedazos de concha y coral molido.
